The hallway consult is
an honored tradition in medicine. This is the way that a practitioner
can get informal consultation about a medical problem without the difficulty
and inconvenience of setting up a formal consultation for the patient.
It is a wonderful way of accomplishing goal-directed continuing education.
At times the hallway consult will result in a referral for the formal consultation,
but frequently it will not.
The term comes from the practice, in the old days before managed care, when practitioners could be more relaxed in their patient care, of meeting a practitioner in the hallway, and asking the question. Now that we are all busier, it is more difficult. We wonder if the new technology of the web and electronic mail can bring the practice back.
