The hallway consult is an honored tradition in medicine.  This is the way that a practitioner can get informal consultation about a medical problem without the difficulty and inconvenience of setting up a formal consultation for the patient.  It is a wonderful way of accomplishing goal-directed continuing education.  At times the hallway consult will result in a referral for the formal consultation, but frequently it will not.

The term comes from the practice, in the old days before managed care, when practitioners could be more relaxed in their patient care, of meeting a practitioner in the hallway, and asking the question.  Now that we are all busier, it is more difficult.  We wonder if the new technology of the web and electronic mail can bring the practice back.

Please feel free to ask your question below.

Guidelines:

  1. This communication is not secure.  Do not use a patient's name.  A case number is best or you can use initials.
  2. Do give relevant clinical information, age, sex, marital status.
  3. Only questions from medical practitioners will be answered.  For this reason we must have your office phone number the first time you write so that our staff can call your office to verify your e-mail address for the answer.  You can shorten the time to reply by using the consult form to send a message that just says you want to register your email address.  Don't forget your office number.   Please let your front desk know that we will be calling to verify your e-mail address so we won't have to bother you directly.
